The Artist’s house is an addition to the Roche Court Gallery where art can be displayed in a domestic context. It is an idealised living environment which is used by visiting artists whose work is on show in the main gallery. The building also provides amenities for visitors to the sculpture park.
The house is located behind the original listed house in order to create a new courtyard. This will be used for the display of sculpture, paintings and drawings. The house is arranged with sleeping quarters at ground level and the large living room / gallery on the first floor. The volume of the room brings light into the space and allows great views out to the new courtyard and the gardens beyond. The project won an RIBA Award in 2002.
